Dr Margaret Whalley, Treasurer of MiSAC has, for many years, run school competitions on the MiSAC model in E & SE Asia. They have been much admired for introducing microbiology to a school population and increasing awareness of the importance of microbes in all aspects of our lives. Many competitions, on topics of global importance, have inspired students to research and investigate issues which have severe health and economic consequences for their nations.
In order to support greater awareness of microbiology, collaborative programmes with Asian partners have delivered teacher training on selected topics, followed by student participation in versions of the UK schools' competition. Run most recently in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries, they have produced a number of excellent entries. All students are to be highly commended for the standard of their entries - all in English which, at best, is their second language.
